Voice input for Claude Code that stays on your Mac
Long prompts are where Claude Code shines and where typing slows you down. Whisp lets you press ⌥ Space, talk through the change you want, and paste a clean prompt into the Claude Code input with ⌘V. Speech is transcribed on your Mac, so it works however you run Claude Code.

How it works
- Focus the Claude Code prompt in Terminal, iTerm2, Ghostty, Warp or the VS Code terminal.
- Press ⌥ Space and say what you want changed. Whisp shows the words live as you speak.
- Press ⌥ Space or Return to finish. The transcript is copied to your clipboard.
- Press ⌘V. Whisp never presses Return, so you review the prompt before Claude sees it.
Whisp or the built-in /voice command?
Claude Code ships a /voice command, and for many people it is the easiest place to start. Its documentation is clear about the trade-offs: audio is streamed to Anthropic’s servers for transcription, it needs a claude.ai account login, and it is not available when Claude Code uses an API key directly, Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud’s Agent Platform or Microsoft Foundry. It also needs a local microphone, so it does not work in SSH or cloud sessions.
Whisp sits outside the terminal. It transcribes on-device with Apple Speech and hands you text on the clipboard, so it does not care how Claude Code is authenticated or where the session runs. You can paste into a remote SSH session the same way you paste anything else.
Prompts that keep their file names
Say “update read me dot md” and Whisp pastes README.md. Common project files such as package.json, tsconfig.json, docker-compose.yml and Cargo.toml, and terms like API, CLI, SQL, MySQL, OAuth and Next.js, are normalized after recognition. Spoken punctuation such as “comma” and “question mark” works, and filler words like “um” are removed.
For your own project names, add them under Vocabulary & Replacements in Settings. Vocabulary terms are passed to Apple Speech as hints, and exact phrase replacements fix anything it still gets wrong. Both stay on your Mac.
Also works with Codex, Gemini CLI and OpenCode
Because Whisp delivers plain text to the clipboard, the same flow works in any terminal agent or editor: Codex CLI, Gemini CLI, OpenCode, Cursor, Zed or a browser chat.
Questions
- Does Whisp send my prompts or audio anywhere?
- No. Whisp requires on-device recognition from Apple Speech, has no account or backend, and deletes the temporary recording after transcription. History is stored locally on your Mac.
- Will Whisp submit the prompt for me?
- No. The Mac App Store version copies the transcript and you paste it with ⌘V. Whisp never presses Return, so nothing runs until you send it.
- Does it work with Claude Code over SSH?
- Yes. Whisp runs on your local Mac and puts text on the clipboard, so you can paste into an SSH session in any terminal.
